Shining a light on the the issue

Human Trafficking is a global problem that encompases many forms of exploitation such as sexual exploitation, forced labour, domestic servitude, forced marriage, forced criminal activity and organ harvesting.

Sex trafficking is
the recruitment, harboring, transportation, provision, obtaining, patronizing, or soliciting of a person for the purposes of a commercial sex act, in which the commercial sex act is induced by force, fraud, or coercion, or in which the person induced to perform such an act has not attained 18 years of age (22 USC § 7102).“The term ‘commercial sex act’ means any sex act on account of which anything of value is given to or received by any person” (22 U.S.C. 7102 (4)).

Who is Affected? Sexual exploitation and trafficking affects every community, ethnicity, education level, economic class, however sexul exploitation disproportionately affects young people experiencing poverty, homelessness, and  discrimination; particularily youth connected to the foster care system.

HOW?
Exploitation is often coordinated through the internet using commercial sex websites, social media and/or dating websites. Some exploitation still occurs on street “tracks”, in businesses and/or through familial/social networks.

As people, we often want to simplify the problem through the lens of statistics, but the people that have gone through the trauma of trafficking are NOT statistics and the issues that led to their exploitation are vast and individually complex. Let's remember not to lose sight of the humanity in every individual that has gone through the horror of human trafficking.

What Happened To Me? Healing For Sex Trafficking Survivors

This book is a second edition and includes a study guide with questions at the end of each chapter. You will learn more about pimps, familial, and gang trafficking. It is filled with survivor stories as well as my own story of trafficking. Each story has a purpose and that is to help others, especially trafficked girls, understand what happened to them when they were trafficked. This book will help break that trauma bond as well as facilitate the healing process. It is recommended for sex trafficking survivors, advocates, counselors, and anyone else who wants to learn more about trafficking and what the healing process looks like for complex trauma. I believe that if each girl understood how they were forced, coerced, or manipulated into trafficking that they could break the trauma bond that was formed with their trafficker and reduce the recidivism rate of being re-exploited.

Corban Addison leads readers on a chilling, eye-opening journey into Mumbai's seedy underworld--and the nightmare of two orphaned girls swept into the international sex trade. When a tsunami rages through their coastal town in India, 17-year-old Ahalya Ghai and her 15-year-old sister Sita are left orphaned and homeless. With almost everyone they know suddenly erased from the face of the earth, the girls set out for the convent where they attend school. They are abducted almost immediately and sold to a Mumbai brothel owner, beginning a hellish descent into the bowels of the sex trade. Halfway across the world, Washington, D.C., attorney Thomas Clarke faces his own personal and professional crisis-and makes the fateful decision to pursue a pro bono sabbatical working in India for an NGO that prosecutes the subcontinent's human traffickers. There, his conscience awakens as he sees firsthand the horrors of the trade in human flesh, and the corrupt judicial system that fosters it. Learning of the fate of Ahalya and Sita, Clarke makes it his personal mission to rescue them, setting the stage for a riveting showdown with an international network of ruthless criminals.

Trauma is a fact of life. Veterans and their families deal with the painful aftermath of combat; one in five Americans has been molested; one in four grew up with alcoholics; one in three couples have engaged in physical violence. Dr. Bessel van der Kolk, one of the world’s foremost experts on trauma, has spent over three decades working with survivors. In The Body Keeps the Score, he uses recent scientific advances to show how trauma literally reshapes both body and brain, compromising sufferers’ capacities for pleasure, engagement, self-control, and trust. He explores innovative treatments—from neurofeedback and meditation to sports, drama, and yoga—that offer new paths to recovery by activating the brain’s natural neuroplasticity. Based on Dr. van der Kolk’s own research and that of other leading specialists, The Body Keeps the Score exposes the tremendous power of our relationships both to hurt and to heal—and offers new hope for reclaiming lives.

Jade Brooks grew up like any other kid — she played with friends, lovingly teased and was teased by her siblings, and excelled at school. It wasn't until she was removed from her family at age 11 that she felt something was wrong. Growing up between two of Halifax's predominantly black neighborhoods, Jade was raised in communities plagued by social problems. Addictions, tangled personal relationships, social workers, and prison terms became everyday facts. When the first serious love of her life entered the picture at age 15, that relationship became the center of everything. Following a path many have taken before, pushed along by her abusive boyfriend, Jade found herself in the sex trade. She learned to sell her body in the strip clubs and massage parlors of Toronto and Montreal in order to survive. Gifted with the ability to recall details of personalities, events, and conversations, Jade reveals a reality that will be unknown to many of her readers. She tells her story straight out, no holds barred, just as she remembers it. By doing so, she allows her readers to come to a far deeper appreciation of the circumstances that lead to the trafficking of young women in Canada today.

Filmed on five continents, in a dozen countries, Not My Life takes viewers into a world where millions of children are exploited, every day, through an astonishing array of practices including forced labor, domestic servitude, begging, sex tourism, sexual violence, and child soldiering.

"Human traffickers are earning billions of dollars on the backs and in the beds of our children," says the film's director, Academy Award nominee, Robert Bilheimer, "and yet no one knows this is happening. We have a huge responsibility, right now, to learn the truth and act on it."

Challenging though it may be, Not My Life's message is ultimately one of hope. Victims of slavery can be set free and go on to live happy and productive lives. Those who advocate for slavery victims are growing in numbers, and are increasingly effective. At this crossroads for the defining human rights issue of our time, Not My Life tells us, as the late Jonathan Mann said, "We can no longer flee, no longer hide, no longer separate ourselves."

Pursuing Justice

The ONLY way to find abundant life and happiness is to give your life away. If God designed us to experience true happiness and abundant life, why do so many Christians feel dissatisfied and purposeless? We try to make our lives better by chasing our own dreams, but that only makes the problem worse. Instead, the path to a just life that''s satisfying and permeated with meaning leads us alongside the orphan, the widow, and the powerless. Using clear evangelical theology and compelling narratives drawn from two decades of global ministry and travel, Ken Wytsma, the founder of The Justice Conference, shows God''s unchanging love for all His children. On the way, the author calls us back to a proper understanding of biblical justice, a redeeming glimpse into the true meaning of righteousness and the remarkable connection between our own joy, the joy of others, and the wondrous Gospel of Jesus Christ. Pursuing Justice shows that God isn''t primarily concerned with personal piety but about empowering His children to do justly, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with their creator. The message is as hopeful as it is fresh: when you discover anew the meaning of the Gospel and give your life away, you will find it...and it will be the best life you can imagine.

The Locust Effect: Why the End of Poverty Requires the End of Violence

While the world has made encouraging strides in the fight against global poverty, the hidden plague of everyday violence silently undermines our best efforts to help the poor. Common violence like rape, forced labor, illegal detention, land theft, and police abuse has become routine and relentless. And like a horde of locusts devouring everything in its path, the unchecked plague of violence ruins lives, blocks the road out of poverty, and undercuts development. How has this plague of violence grown so ferocious? In one of the most remarkable social disasters of the last half century, basic public justice systems in the developing world have descended into a state of utter collapse, and there's nothing shielding the poor from violent people. Gary A. Haugen and Victor Boutros offer a searing account of how we got here and what it will take to end the plague. The Locust Effect is a gripping journey into the streets and slums where fear is a daily reality for billions of the world's poorest, where safety is secured only for those with money, and where much of our well-intended aid is lost in the daily chaos of violence. While their call to action is urgent, Haugen and Boutros provide hope, a real solution and an ambitious way forward. The Locust Effect will forever change the way we understand global poverty, and will help secure a safe path to prosperity for the global poor in the 21st century.

Human trafficking is a media buzz word that often conjures images of brothels in Thailand or confusion with the ongoing immigration debate. This innovative digital training tool cuts through the confusion, arms the viewer with an understanding of what human trafficking is and is not, and helps them recognize that this is a Texas problem with Texas buyers, sellers, and victims. It refocuses our attention on adults and children who are regularly exploited but are unlikely to self-identify as victims or seek help. This video walks the audience through actual cases prosecuted in the state of Texas, identifies the tools of traffickers and how they are typically utilized to obtain and maintain victims, and equips viewers with red flags and a reporting protocol. Most of all, it challenges Texans to change the culture in which we live from one that identifies with and honors perpetrators to one that provides safety, security, and genuine reintegration for the survivors of trafficking.

When news reports show the arrest of a human trafficker and their victims finding freedom in the United States, Americans ask, “How did that happen?” Catalleya, through their own story, will demystify the silent trade of young people in our own backyard and challenge society to find one way to respond to the problem.

The Girl Next Door

This is the true story of an all-American teenager, who survived two years of being a sex slave in the Michigan suburbs at the age of 15. Over a two-year period, she was stalked, intimidated, sold and broken in mind and body. Out of shame, guilt and fear of what could happen to her young brothers, Theresa stayed silent. Twenty years later, Theresa is speaking out on the reality of human trafficking in the U.S. and how she overcame her past.On her worst night, being auctioned off to nearly two dozen men in a dingy, dirty, inner city Detroit motel, Ms. Flores recalled the only item that would have reached out to her, a bar of soap to clean up. With that in mind, she created S.O.A.P. -'Save Our Adolescents from Prostitution'.In 2009 Theresa Flores was appointed to the Ohio Attorney General’s Human Trafficking Commission and has testified before the Ohio House and Senate in support of Human Trafficking Legislation. Her efforts were a major part of the success of SB235 being passed into law by Ohio Governor Strickland on December 23, 2010.
